Academic Games
Club Overview
Academic Games Leagues of America (AGLOA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing “Thinking Kids” of character, excellence, and integrity. AGLOA provides a series of Academic Games competitions throughout the nation, resulting in a national championship tournament in late April each year. Students who excel academically have a chance to compete and be rewarded for their accomplishments. Academic Games tournaments challenge students to use higher order thinking skills in the subjects of Language Arts, English, History and Mathematics. Players receive recognition and awards in the same way that sports champions are honored.
Students compete in four games:
- Propaganda: While playing Propaganda, players learn to recognize techniques of persuasion that are often used by advertisers, politicians, editorial writers, and in normal human interaction. Players increase their ability to discern the truth from smokescreens; they learn to figure out the reality of situations rather than getting duped by the techniques. Players become critical thinkers.
- Presidents: Presidents players learn about and develop an understanding of the personalities, historical contexts, political decisions, and other events of the Presidents of the United States of America.
- On-Sets: On-Sets is very valuable in teaching about spatial relationships. The mathematical content of the game is Set Theory.
- Equations: Equations is the Game of Creative Mathematics. Equations involves authentic learning experiences and problem solving at the highest levels.
